CALLLIGRAPHY & ILLUMINATION

Eldred is the family scribe--a calligrapher and illluminator.
His work is primarily creating award documents (colloquially known as "scrolls") for people who receive accolades within the SCA, Inc.
Eldred has produced over 100 scrolls for the SCA over the years, and this gallery represents a small portion of them.
His skills have been recognized by the SCA, and he continues to support the scribal community through education, and websites.

Order of the Pelican for Rufus Barbarossa

The general style is 8th century Norse, loosely inspired by the Gotland Stones. The script is in Elder Futhark, in the tradition of a skald describing the reasons for the award as well as the text that conveys the award in the SCA.

Order of the Laurel for Mizuno Mizuno_Sakami_Laurel

The general style is from the late Edo period. Sumi ink and gouache on rice paper, mounted on the same red silk used for Mizuno's elevation kimono.

Small references to Mizuno's Peers are hidden in the illumination: an oni representing Corwyn Wodewarde, a phoenix representing Rachel Wallace, and an owl representing Siobhán NicDhuinnshléibhe

Order of the Pelican for Etain of Sutherland

Based on the Walpurgis Fechtbuch (MS_I.33), folios 1v and 1r.

Order of the Pelican for Lucien de la Rochelle

Inspired by the image of the constellation of Cygnus in a 9th century copy of Cicero's Ararea (British Library, Harley 647, fols. 9r) and includes encyphered message for Lucien hidden in the scales of the sea-dog's tail.

Order of the White Scarf for Ragnarr Blackhammer

Inspired by the Hours of Catherine of Cleves

Order of the Laurel for Bríg ingen Érennaigh

Inspired by the Luttrell Psalter

Award of the Sharks Tooth

Inspired by the image of the constellation of Cygnus in a 9th century copy of Cicero's Ararea (British Library, Harley 647, fols. 9r)

These links will take you to pages containing images I have created of the heraldry for various groups, awards, and Orders in the Society for Creative Anachronism.
Labours of the Year Black and white images of the Medieval Calendar Year can be found here. These images are based on period manuscripts and were originally published in 2001, one per month, in the Nottinghill Quill, the newsletter for the Barony of Nottinghill Coill
Cartoons

Believe it or not, Eldred actually does have a sense of humor. Seriously, one of his dream jobs as a kid was to be an animator, so using art to inject humor into life is not surprising.

These cartoons are, of course, satirical in nature, but are not intended to offend anyone. Any similarity to actual living or dead persons is a mere visual coincidence no matter what YOU think. Most of these are related to direct experience, knowledge, or (NSTIW) tales from the SCA.
