After attending a University of Atlantia class on campaign furniture, I took the notes, revised the plans to suit the size vehicle I used,
and held a workshop in my wood shop for members of the Canton of Falconcree to build their own breakdown tables and benches for taking
to events (or other suitable use). I've typed up my notes and provided the sketch used for the workshop.
Materials
4' x 8' 1/2" thick BC grade plywood
water based stain or paint
polyurethane
- Following the grand tradition of carpenters everyewhere, measure your plywood to esure your dimensions are consistent.
- Adjust the diagram based on your needs and the actual plywood dimensions, taking into account the saw kerf width (1/8")
- Decorative cut outs may be more elaborate if you choose, but make sure you can still slide the ends of your stretchers through them.
- The side elipses for the table legs are 9" x 18" centered on the side of the legs
Shop Notes
- A 4"x8" sheet of plywood is acutally slightly smaller than 48" x 96" due to shrinkage
- So not forget saw blades also have width. In general, 1/8" wide. Adjust accordingly with your cuts
- Do not assume your plywood is square (each corner at 90 °)
- 30" is a good standard table height. It assumes bench/chair seat height is 18"
- Adjust your measurements to ensure your table fits into your vehicle. Most SUVs can accomodate 60" x 30"
- In all likelihood, your table will not be sitting on level ground, complete precision is not necessary, but accuracy is
- The provided plan maximizes the use of plywood and minimizes waste
- The original plans from the University class called for slots and tabs to position the table top. I dislike having holes in my table top, so I eliminated them.
If you follow my plan, you may find it desirable to add cleats to the bottom of your tabletop
